What an incredible year it’s been here at Guinea Pig Magazine! From your amazing stories to expert advice and unforgettable moments, 2024 has been nothing short of amazing. Let’s take a look at the highlights that made us smile, laugh, and most of all, learn more about giving our guinea pigs the best care possible.
A poop-tastic start to 2024!
We started the year with the piggy-prop perfect @gus.n.ruby gracing the cover of Issue 78. We all fondly remembered Jackie’s dear Gus, while also celebrating a major win for GPM. We took home the Animal Star Award for Best Pet-Related Business, alongside award winner Sue Tate of Cavy Corner and her piggy, Brave. Founder Mary Burgess summed up our joy perfectly, saying, “Guinea Pig Magazine epitomises everything about running a small business whilst raising awareness of guinea pigs!”
This issue also featured standout expert articles, including the fascinating truth in poop – Poopology, part one of a detailed three-part series on reproductive system disease in sows by Vet Agata, and Saskia’s insights into managing arthritis in older guinea pigs.
Our March/April issue (Issue 79) saw things taking a quirky turn when our editor, Alison, “became AI” (don’t worry, not literally!). This issue introduced our wonderful readers to guinea pig expert Sarah Birtley of Squeak Dreams and her adorable herd, who later joined us as a regular columnist – a brilliant addition to the team (hi, Sarah!).
Expert Cathy Alliss shared practical advice in her Beginner’s Guide to Guinea Pigs, perfect for anyone welcoming new piggies into their home, while Piggy Whisperer, Wiebke Wiese-Thomas, dived into the fascinating world of dominance behaviours in guinea pigs.
May and June (Issue 80) brought a news story that captured the attention if the nation, UK. DiscoPig made headlines after being found abandoned on the London Underground. Thanks to the RSPCA, he now has a loving forever home.
We had the pleasure of meeting Instagram royalty, Paul and Lionel of @fransfloofs – a truly handsome pair of piggy princes! Adding to the excitement, we also enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of Northumberland Zoo’s Hog Springs, a place we’re still swooning over. This issue also featured expert articles tackling important topics including disappearing breeds and Saskia’s no-nonsense take on the problems Satins face.
Issue 80 of Guinea Pig Magazine
Lights, Camera, Wheek!
July and August (Issue 81) were huge months for Guinea Pig Magazine as we shared our TV debut on the UK’s Have I Got News For You – definitely one of our proudest moments!
We also introduced the social media stars @swedishpiggymafia and hosted an engaging Ask The Experts session in our pages. From bloating and dental issues to daisies and haypokes, our experts tackled it all, while the GPM panel sparked an insightful debate on the hot topic of breeding.
September and October (Issue 82) brought some seriously spooky vibes as the lovely HayPigs piggies stole the spotlight. Rik and Helen took us behind the scenes and introduced their herd, and we featured what might just be the spookiest GPM cover ever!
Saskia’s Straight Talking article tackled the importance of rescue over retail, while our pigfluencers reviewed a fantastic range of delicous Rosewood goodies. Wiebke continued her Stones, Pees & Squeaky Wees series, and this is the issue that Sarah Birtley of Squeak Dreams made her GPM debut with brilliant advice on taming spooked piggies.
And here we are, nearly at the end of the year! Our November/December issue (Issue 83) is brimming with festive pigy cheer, featuring the very kind and very fun AJ and her herd of derpy beans @burrito_nibbler.
This issue is packed with treats, including six pages of piggy-perfect gifts, expert tips for stress-free nail trimming, and five fun festive activities for you and your guinea pigs from Sarah Birtley. We also highlight the incredible work of guinea pig rescues in Rescue Realities, with Sue Tate of Cavy Corner, shining a light on this important cause.
What a way to wrap up 2024! Your stories, pictures, and love for guinea pigs have truly been GPM’s daily hay, and we can’t thank you enough. Keep sending your stories and photos in to alison@guineapigmagazine.com – we love hearing from you!
